The Track
The track, which runs through Singapore's famed Marina Bay area and traverses landmarks like Raffles Boulevard and the Fullerton Hotel, is just over 5 km in length and encompasses streets lined with modern high-rise buildings on the one side and elegant, colonial mansions on the other.
The entire circuit has been re-surfaced for the long-awaited event and the latest addition to the track is a $40 million state-of-the-art pit building. Remarkably, the pits are a three-storey structure erected on Marina Promenade and house 36 garages for the race teams and facilities for the media.
The Lighting
The one aspect of the race that has caused the most consternation is, of course, the lighting. Formula One race cars do not have head lamps and consequently the track will have to be brilliantly lit if it is to be considered safe for the drivers, the fans and the pit teams. Poor weather and visibility may be added headaches for the drivers on the day!
The night race will, without a doubt, raise the bar for the drivers and will add excitement and ambiance for the fans but the only reason it is to be held at night is simply so the race reaches optimum live television audiences in Europe and the United States and time zones dictate that it be held at night!
The Action
Fans addicted to raw pace are advised to head for the Raffles Grandstand as speed in excess of 300 kph is anticipated for the Raffles Boulevard and St Andrews Road, Esplanade Drive and the pit straight are also excellent velocity viewpoints. Best hurry though, as over 90% of tickets have been snaffled up by the multitudes expected at the ground breaking race on September 26 - 28.
